"The best stories draw you in–leave you hanging on the side of a cliff and pull you up before the spindly branch snaps."
-Kaylin McFarren

Welcome to Creative Edge Publishing

As many of you are aware, book publishing is easy but it's unlike any other business. Although there is a lot to learn, fortunately, there is also a lot of help readily available. Unlike most industries, people in publishing are helpful, friendly and supportive. Since each book is unique, there is very little competition and publishers rarely feel threatened by another book. Consequently, we do not mind sharing what we have learned about this wonderful book publishing industry. In fact, we like to say, "The greatest challenge in book publishing is how to channel excitement over the next release."

Many famous books got their start being published by the author; some still are. Self-publishing is, after all, an early-American tradition. In the early days of the New World, the person with the printing press was often the author, publisher, printer and bookshop. Some people think that most of those who self-publish do so because several publishers have turned them down. That is occasionally true. However, most people today weigh the advantages and disadvantages of selling out to a publisher and make an educated decision to publish themselves.

Ten years ago, after exploring the journey to large publishing houses and not fitting inside genre-specific boxes, Kaylin McFarren placed her printed dreams in the hands of a small publisher. Although the distribution was limited, with her enthusiastic and determined efforts, she managed to build momentum in sales. Yet all those marketing efforts paid very small dividends. What made it worse was the fact that small press p.o.d. authors were unacceptable in "certain circles" and even less so when the focus remained primarily on ebook sales. Although steadfast bookstore buyers preferred the smell and touch of a "genuine" book cover, technology and the need for instant gratification by young consumers made it popular to buy novels with the press of a button and a price tag one-third that of a shelved paperback novel.

It has become an interesting dilemma between established writers and their mid to large size houses when the difference in profit for self-promoting, self-publishing authors is so significant. There seems to be very little advantage to remain tied to houses that depend on their authors to market and promote their work, using royalty advances they are expected to earn out. This is the logic behind Kaylin's decision to open her own publishing firm. Creative Edge Publishing represents the work of this author exclusively and is proud to join thousands of individuals who have chosen to drop the reins on their free-spirited horses and follow the winds to lush, creative grounds.

ANNIHILATION

You can't escape from what you are

With the death of Lucifer, Queen Lucinda assumes control of Hell, ordering her soldiers to prepare for a doomsday war with Heaven. Craving eternal power, she devours the souls of gifted demonic beings, acquiring their abilities to destroy her perceived political enemies.

Meanwhile, the Black Crows meet with the Knights of Darkness in their hidden headquarters, plotting against Lucinda in their efforts to maintain peace and the balance of power. Consumed by hatred over Crighton Daemonium's unrequited love, Lucinda is unaware of the secret conspiracy brewing, or that Lucifer's spirit has returned to Hell inside the body of a soul–trapped demon.

Reclaiming his throne, Lucifer punishes his daughter for her act of treason. However, his obsession with Samara, Crighton's beautiful daughter, leaves him incapable of controlling his stolen body. After forcing her into submission, he names Samara the new Queen of Hell yet continues his authoritarian rule. When an insurgency breaks out on Earth, he becomes distracted long enough for her to be kidnapped by Nexus rebel forces, believing her to be the prophesied savior of their planet.

Is Samara the Phoenix, destined to destroy Lucifer? Or is she his soulmate and the true Queen of Hell?

"It's unusual to find an occult fantasy title that touches psychological revelation readers, but Annihilation achieves this and more, providing not just an engrossing foray into courage and self-realization, but an investigation of the foundations of good intentions gone awry and the gray area that exists between good and evil"
-D. Donovan, Senior Reviewer, Midwest Book Review

"Much of the cast is gleefully complex, harboring unexpected connections to others, and rarely trustworthy, though Samara is a consistently appealing young protagonist. While Lucinda's thirst for power drives the story, the lengthy final act swerves drastically, introducing a myriad of new characters and twists aplenty involving Samara and a weirdly specific prophecy. Still, the doozy of a cliffhanger will surely leave readers yearning for a third series installment. To summarize, supernatural beings propel this intricate, intriguing, and surprisingly energetic tale."
-Kirkus Review

"Annihilation, the sequel to Kaylin McFarren's award-winning Soul Seeker, is a decidedly Shakespearean thriller. Amidst the supernatural world, the novel is essentially a classic story about love, betrayal and power between and among royal families. McFarren's blatantly "human" portrayal of Samara Daemonium's youthful obsessions set her up to be both victim, royal and a star in a wholly compelling coming-of-age story. To get this most out of Annihilation, readers are highly encouraged to read Soul Seeker first."

"Sweetheart, you knew who you were dancing with the moment you arrived. You just chose to see the good and deny the bad. I personally don't think you should change that about yourself. It's possible, when you think about it, that your energy and eternal optimism could even bring out the best in me."

Shaking her head, she laughed without humor. "I greatly doubt that."

"No matter. I made a horrible mistake and for that I'm sorry. I know you can't forget what happened and I don't expect you to, but you must forgive me. You must know I wasn't in my right mind. You must believe I won't hurt you again...not like that. Unless you deliberately provoke me. Then there's no telling how far I will go."

SOUL SEEKER

"Did he say what he wanted from you?" Poe asked.

"It's not a matter of what he wants. It's a matter of who he wants. He handpicks his victims and disappears with them."

"Just what are you saying?"

"He's not human, Mr. Poe. Maybe he used to be, but not anymore. I can't explain it but that thing isn't human." Willkie fixed himself another drink and offered one to Poe.

"No thanks. So, what happened next?"

"He turned, walked out and left. But before he did, he said one last thing to me. 'I'll see you soon, Willkie. Very soon.' The officer sighed. "And I believe it. Whether it's five days or ten months or twenty years from now, I believe he'll come back for me. For what I kept secret, for what I've done."

"High Flying elevates the time travel genre to new heights - literally. With sparkling prose and incredible sensitivity to challenging subjects, McFarren steps out strong in her first book since the end of her well-known Threads series. An entertaining read all around, with an indefatigable female lead and a bold, in-your-face writing style, this thriller will undoubtedly leave readers satisfied, but it also asks challenging questions that will linger after the final twists are revealed."
-Self-Publishing Review

"Like her previous work, McFarren's latest novel combines dangerous combat and human drama with an element of the mysterious to create something truly unique and wholly entertaining."

Skylar didn't understand, as if her brain had short-circuited and needed to be rebooted. "What did you say?"

"They were shot," Mr. Capellan clarified. "And now they're both dead."

Around her, everything was in fast-forward while she stood motionless in the middle of it all. She couldn't think, couldn't breathe, couldn't stop crying. "It can't be true," she kept repeating, wiping away tears from her eyes.

"Roxy kept asking for you," he said in a deep, impassioned voice. "Why didn't you come? Why didn't you care enough to check on her?"

Skylar tried to sit down, but it was more like a stumble and fall that left her in a trembling heap on the floor with the coiled phone cord stretched around her. Disbelief, anger, nausea and sadness. Those were just a few of the emotions she was feeling. She had so many thoughts running through her head, in fact, that her mind ached and her body physically hurt…everywhere.

God, Rachel. The worst was yet to come. He glanced at the ship's fantail, now vacant except for Ian. The mountainous man stood hunched over, face in his hands, sobbing.

"I'll speak to her," Chase said. He waited until the officer returned to his car. Until he was completely alone. Why had he agreed to do such a thing? Knock on Rachel's door. Tell her he was responsible for taking away the only parent she had left. Watch the love in her eyes turn to hate. Although he loathed his decision, he chose the coward's way out. He flipped open his phone and auto-dialed her number.

Rachel's voice came on the line. Confident, captivating. Unaware. "So, don't tell me. Another fool's errand, right? I swear my father will never grow up."

Chase remained silent for an eternal moment and in those seconds, he wished for the strength of Goliath - to rein in his quaking nerves, to give him the courage to spill the words that refused to form.

"Chase?" Concern edged her tone. "Chase, are you there?"

He forced another swallow. "Rachel, listen," he began, a rasp of a voice. Rusted from panic, from guilt. From disbelief. "Something happened. It...it's your dad."

Rachel glared at the annoying man, willing him to be sucked out the window. But then she'd never know his whole story. "You're not a private investigator, are you, Mr. Shinzo?" she grilled.

He picked up his torn roll and smeared it with more jam. "I never said I was."

"But you inferred as much."

"That was never my intent. If you recall, I never told you what I actually recover."

She shook her head and sarcastically laughed. "Oh my God...you're a treasure hunter, aren't you? I've been sitting next to my competition this whole time."

Shinzo chuckled. "Not quite."

"So what do you collect then?"

"I think you'd have a hard time believing me if I told you."

"Try me," she said then inwardly cringed at her insistence.

After another well-chewed mouthful, he looked directly at her and replied in a matter-of-fact tone, "Souls."

Devon Lyons should have been the last person to ask for advice, but as it was, no one knew Rachel better than he did. At least that was what Chase had come to believe. "OK," he finally said, chewing a mouthful. "I'm listening."

Devon leaned forward on his elbows. "After Mom ran off, our father died, and you skipped town, my sister was diagnosed with clinical depression. She spent time with a therapist working through a shitload of stuff. Even though you're back now and both working together, trust will always be an issue for her. It'll be up to you to erase any doubts in her mind. Even though you have a seven-year-old daughter and a treasure-hunting career taking you around the world, you'll need to remind her that she'll always be the center of your universe. Now that might sound easy enough to follow through with, but I assure you it won't be. Rachel has always been a skeptic and as stubborn as they come. And what's more," he continued, with a look of intenseness gleaming in his eyes, "she needs to understand that accepting your protection doesn't mean she's surrendering her power, and having your baby doesn't mean she's giving up her independence, which she values above all else. If you can manage all that and still hang on to your sanity, then you might have a future together. Until then," he said, easing back in his seat, "I wouldn't hold my breath."

She heard a muffled sound in the next room and turned off the water. After easing the shower door open, she strained her ears and heard nothing, but her instincts told her otherwise. She stepped onto the bamboo grate covering the stone floor and grabbed the katana sword resting against the wall. The sound of someone rapidly approaching increased her heart rate. Her right hand shook involuntarily, yet she managed to remain calm. The bathroom door flew open suddenly, exposing two members of Kurosaki's gang.

The first man stared at her, snarling. "You murder a man in his home and have the nerve to use his shower? What kind of monster are you?" He reached for her arm while the second man stood back watching–his coal-black eyes piercing her skull.

"The worst kind," Akira spat. She drew her sword with lightning speed, beheading the first one with a one-handed horizontal cut. Blood sprayed over the mirror above the sink. She dropped her sheath and held the sword in front of her with both hands. The second manis face paled, and his jaw slacked. He remained motionless for endless seconds before charging at Akira with a knife stretched out before him. With one swift movement, she raised her sword above her head and brought it down hard and fast across his neck. She pulled the blade back, sending blood spraying across her face.

Another body fell to the floor.
